API 6A Gate Valve Buying Guide: Don't Quote by Pressure Only

Created on 10.08

Why "API 6A Gate Valve" Is Not Enough for Your RFQ

In oil & gas procurement, one of the most common mistakes is writing an RFQ that says only: "API 6A Gate Valve, 3-1/16", 10,000 psi." Two valves with the same pressure rating can differ by thousands of dollars—and by whether they survive six months on a sour gas well. API 6A is a standard, not a complete specification.
At FUZER, we review hundreds of valve inquiries every year. At least 40% arrive with incomplete or conflicting specifications. This guide explains what your engineering and procurement teams need to define before requesting a quote.

Understanding API 6A: What the Standard Covers

API 6A (ISO 10423) specifies requirements for wellhead and tree equipment used in oil and gas drilling and production. It covers:
• Pressure ratings from 2,000 psi to 15,000 psi
• Temperature classes from K (−60°C) to U (+121°C and above)
• Material classes (AA through HH) based on environmental severity
• Product specification levels (PSL 1–4) defining quality, testing, and traceability
• Performance requirements (PR1 / PR2) for valve function under cycling
What API 6A does NOT do: It does not specify hardfacing grades, coating systems, actuator types, or exact trim materials. Those are left to the purchaser's detailed specification.

Material Class: The Hidden Cost Driver

Material class defines the chemical composition and mechanical properties of pressure-containing parts. Choosing the wrong class leads to either overspending or catastrophic failure.
Class
Typical Environment
Notes
AA
Non-sour, CO₂ < 0.05%
Carbon steel, lowest cost
BB
Sour, H₂S < 0.05%
NACE MR0175 required
CC
Sour, H₂S 0.05–0.3%
Controlled hardness
DD
Sour, H₂S 0.3–5%
Low alloy, strict limits
EE
Sour, H₂S 5–15%
High alloy or stainless
FF
Sour, H₂S 15–30%
Duplex/super duplex
HH
Sour, H₂S > 30%
Nickel-based alloys
💡 FUZER tip: If your well has any H₂S, do not default to Class AA. Specify NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance and the correct material class from the start.

PSL Levels: What Traceability Do You Need?

Product Specification Level (PSL) determines the extent of quality control, non-destructive examination (NDE), and documentation:
• PSL 1: Basic, visual and dimensional inspection only
• PSL 2: Adds hardness testing, magnetic particle inspection (MPI)
• PSL 3: Adds ultrasonic testing (UT), positive material identification (PMI), full traceability
• PSL 4: Most stringent, for critical service (offshore, HPHT)
Many buyers over-specify PSL 4 for land rigs—or under-specify PSL 1 for offshore. Match the PSL to your project risk, not your budget fears.

PR1 vs PR2: When Performance Testing Is Required

• PR1: Design validation only. The valve type is tested once; production valves get only hydrostatic shell test.
• PR2: Mandatory performance qualification per API 6A Annex F. Includes thermal cycling (−18°C to +121°C), pressure cycling, and functional operation under load.
PR2 adds cost and lead time but is often required by national oil companies (NOCs) for critical wells.

Hardfacing & Trim Selection

Gate and seat faces are wear points. Common hardfacing materials include:
• Stellite 6 / 12: Cobalt-based, excellent galling resistance
• Colmonoy 4 / 5 / 75: Nickel-based, good for abrasive service
• Tungsten carbide overlay: Maximum erosion resistance for frac and sand-producing wells
FUZER can match trim materials to your well fluid composition (H₂S, CO₂, sand, brine) and recommend the most cost-effective hardfacing.

End Connections & Actuation

Common end connections for API 6A gate valves:
• RTJ (Ring Type Joint) flanges — most common
• Hub connectors (Fig 1502, Fig 2002, etc.)
• Threaded ends (smaller sizes, lower pressure)
• Butt weld ends (subsea and pipeline tie-in)
Actuation options:
• Manual handwheel
• Gear operator (for high torque)
• Hydraulic actuator (remote wellhead control)
• Pneumatic actuator (emergency shutdown)

FAQ
Q1: What fluid composition data do I need to provide for an accurate quote?
A1: To specify the correct material class and trim, please share: (1) H₂S concentration (ppm or %), (2) CO₂ concentration (%), (3) chloride content (mg/L), (4) whether sand or abrasive solids are present, (5) produced water pH, and (6) bottomhole temperature. With these six parameters, we can determine NACE MR0175 compliance, hardfacing grade, and avoid both under-specification and over-specification.
Q2: Should I quote based on working pressure or rated pressure?
A2: Always specify the required API 6A pressure rating (3K / 5K / 10K / 15K psi), not the operating pressure. The valve rating must meet or exceed the maximum anticipated surface pressure of your well. We'll confirm the correct rating based on your well data.
Q3: What temperature range should I specify?
A3: Provide both the minimum ambient temperature and the maximum process fluid temperature at the valve location. This determines the API 6A temperature class (K, L, P, R, S, T, or U) and the correct sealing material for stem packing and seat.
Q4: Can FUZER supply both PR1 and PR2 valves?
A4: Yes. We supply PR1 as standard and coordinate PR2 third-party witness testing per project requirement. PR2 is typically required by NOCs, offshore operators, and HPHT wells.
Q5: Can you manufacture valves according to our drawings or specific well conditions?
A5: Yes. With in-house CNC forging, machining, and an independent testing laboratory, FUZER supports both standardized production and custom OEM/ODM solutions. Send us your P&ID, dimensional drawings, or well data sheet, and our engineering team will confirm feasibility, lead time, and pricing within 24 hours.
