How to Install Wellhead Equipment: API 6A Step-by-Step

Created on 10.29
Wellhead installation is a high-precision, safety-critical operation for oil and gas surface facilities. Follow this practical step-by-step guide to install surface wellhead equipment in compliance with API 6A standards.

Pre-Installation Checks

Figure 1: Wellhead Assembly & Wellbore Structure Overview API 6A wellhead layout showing conductor pipe, surface casing, intermediate casing, production casing, tubing head spool, casing head, and key elevation references.
  • Validate API 6A monogram, PSL level, material class and rated working pressure.
  • Inspect flange faces and RTJ grooves carefully; reject components with scratches, dents or residual debris.
  • Never reuse ring gaskets. Select the correct R, RX or BX ring gasket to match your flange specification.
  • Confirm nominal bore, flange type (6B / 6BX), and prepare the OEM bolt torque chart before lifting.

Installation Steps

1. Casing Heads

Figure 2: API 6A Casing Head Assembly Casing head with side gate valves, the base component of surface wellhead for hanging casing strings and isolating annulus pressure.
Clean mating flange surfaces, seat the casing hanger properly, fit a brand-new RTJ gasket, then tighten bolts in a cross-torque sequence: 30% → 75% → 100% of target torque.

2. Casing Spool / Drilling Spool

Stack casing spool or drilling spool on top of the casing head as required for multi-stage casing. Align bolt holes, install new ring gasket and torque studs following cross-pattern sequence. We supply API 6A casing spools and drilling spools for your wellhead stacking configuration.

3. Tubing Head Assembly

After casing spool installation and pressure test, mount the tubing head assembly on top. Align the flange, install a new RTJ gasket and torque studs following the cross-pattern procedure. Land the tubing hanger and engage the lockdown mechanism.

4. Christmas Tree (X-Mas Tree)

Lift the production tree vertically without side load. Align it with the upper flange of the tubing head assembly, install a new ring gasket and complete bolting in three torque passes. Connect wing valves and choke assembly after bolting.

5. BOP Interface (If Applicable)

If a BOP stack is fitted on the wellhead, carry out seal and flange integrity testing prior to rigging down the BOP and landing the Christmas tree.
Our supporting wellhead & manifold products for this system: API 6A Gate Valves (Slab gate, expanding gate, wedge gate, Demco & Oteco mud gate valve), Adapters, Crossovers, Tees, Flanges, API Thread Adapters, Hammer Unions, Chiksan circulating steel hose loops, swivel joints, pup joints and high-pressure drilling manifold assemblies.

Pressure Test Procedure

  • Low-pressure pneumatic leak check
  • Hydrostatic test at 1.5 times the rated working pressure
  • Cavity isolation test and valve seat sealing test
  • Stroke all valves multiple times to verify smooth operation

Key Precautions

Common Troubleshooting

  • Flange leakage: Replace the ring gasket and re-torque in cross sequence.
  • Sticky valve stem: Lubricate the stem packing and clear trapped debris.
  • Faulty pressure gauge: Recalibrate or replace the gauge.

FAQ

Q1: What products can you provide for API 6A wellhead systems?
A1: We manufacture Casing Heads, Casing Spools, Drilling Spools, various API 6A gate valves, adapters, crossovers, tees, flanges, thread adapters, hammer unions, Chiksan steel hose loops, swivel joints, pup joints and high-pressure drilling manifold assemblies. We can assist you in sourcing other matching well equipment to complete your well package.
Q2: Can you support a full wellhead package?
A2: Yes. Besides our core manufactured items, we can coordinate and source complementary well components to meet your one-stop project requirement.
Q3: Is a BOP stack mandatory for all wells? When is a BOP required?
A3: A BOP stack is not required for all well stages. It is mandatory during drilling, open-hole testing, well intervention and workover operations to provide well control against kick or blowout risk. Once the well is completed and the Christmas tree is installed for regular production, the BOP stack will be rigged down. BOPs are often reused or rented for multiple drilling jobs.
