The choke manifold regulates bottom-hole pressure during drilling, completion or workover operations. It uses adjustable chokes (often paired with gate valves) to restrict flow, enabling accurate control of drilling fluid returns. The kill manifold provides a high-capacity route to pump kill-weight mud into the wellbore, enabling a well kill operation to suppress formation pressure. It relies on full-bore gate valves for rapid, unobstructed opening and closing. All valves must match the pressure class of the connected drilling spool. The choke and kill manifold connects to the wellhead assembly via drilling spools, which form the core interface between BOP stack and mud circulation system. 

Integration with Mud Circulation

Both manifolds form part of the primary mud circulation circuit. During normal drilling, mud circulates through the system; under well control events, the choke and kill lines are activated. Valve selection requires consideration of both temperature-pressure ratings and material resistance to H2S and CO2.
